This rocky landscape photographed on a freezing winter day in Wales started out as a swamp on the Equator. Soft mud turned into sedimentary rock over millions of years. This windswept shore resembles a human-built environment with flat surfaces, cube-shaped rocks and paved causeways to the sea.
I took the chance to get some fresh air and visit beautiful Monknash beach while staying with my in-laws in South Wales during the Christmas break. The layers of sedimentary rock are so neat and tidy, they look man-made. They were created over hundreds of millions of years, starting to form when what is now Wales was on the equator. You need to stay away from the cliffs which are constantly crumbling, sending a shower of boulders and rocks onto the beach every so often.
Humans are free to visit but nature runs this construction project.
It was mostly cloudy that day with the sun peeking through the clouds occasionally. The car park was full but walk for 20 minutes and you have the beach to yourself. Nice waterfall too.
